Jiménez grew up as an undocumented migrant farmworker in California, moving from crop to crop, school to school, always leaving before he could settle. He wrote this for young readers because he wanted children to understand what that life actually felt like from inside it — not as a political issue but as a child's experience of instability, longing, and resilience. The most important Raises the Future book about the border that exists.
